We want your views on our Goytre Hall Wood Woodland Investment Grant (TWIG) Project!

Goytre Hall Wood is a 3.5-hectare restored ancient woodland near Penperlleni, between the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and the A4042. Owned and managed by Monmouthshire County Council, it is an important woodland habitat providing connections between other woodland sites and supporting a range of wildlife, including woodland birds, bats and ancient woodland plants.

The site is also a well-used community woodland, valued for recreation, education and wellbeing.

The Woodland Investment Grant (TWIG) project aims to restore and enhance the woodland for both nature and people. The project will tackle issues such as ash dieback, invasive species and limited woodland diversity through habitat management, glade creation, tree planting and stream restoration.

It will also improve access with better paths, seating, interpretation and disabled parking, while creating opportunities for volunteering, green skills training, school activities and community involvement.

The long-term goal is to create a more resilient, accessible and biodiverse woodland that contributes to the National Forest for Wales and is actively supported by the local community.

Key benefits of the project

  • A healthier woodland - improving the condition of the woodland through habitat restoration and careful woodland management.
  • More space for wildlife - creating better habitat for woodland plants, birds, bats and other species, while strengthening links to surrounding woodlands.
  • Improved access and facilities - making the woodland more welcoming and accessible with path improvements, seating, interpretation and better visitor facilities.
  • A woodland inspired sculpture trail - creating new features that celebrate the woodland and encourage people to explore and enjoy the site.
  • Learning, volunteering and wellbeing opportunities - providing training, outdoor activities and opportunities for local people to get involved in caring for the woodland.
  • A lasting legacy for future generations - ensuring Goytre Hall Wood continues to be a valued place for nature, recreation and community wellbeing.
