The Welsh language is an important part of Monmouthshire's identity, heritage and future. It can be seen in our place names, schools, communities, culture and public services. Whether you speak Welsh every day, are learning, know a few words and phrases, or have never used the language before, we would like to hear your views.

From Monday, 5 October until Monday, 30 November 2026, Monmouthshire County Council is consulting on its draft Welsh Language Strategy 2027-2032, which sets out how we will promote and support the use of Welsh across the county over the next five years. The strategy aims to make Welsh more visible, more valued and more widely used in everyday life.

The draft strategy focuses on five key areas: supporting Welsh-medium education, helping families and learners use Welsh, creating more opportunities to use Welsh in communities, strengthening Welsh-language services and workforce confidence, and increasing the visibility of Welsh across Monmouthshire's places, identity and digital life.

We know that Monmouthshire has a unique position as a border county and that people's experiences of Welsh vary. That is why your feedback is so important. We want to understand what would encourage more people to learn, use, hear and see Welsh, what barriers exist, and what practical actions could make a positive difference in our communities.

Your views will help shape the final strategy and guide future work with schools, community groups, businesses, public services and residents. Together, we can help ensure Welsh continues to grow and thrive in Monmouthshire for current and future generations.

First read either the full draft strategy document or the summary document, then please complete the survey on this page no later than Monday, 30 November 2026. Your feedback will help shape the future of the Welsh language in Monmouthshire

Paper copies of the survey will be available at our community hubs in Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow, Gilwern, Magor, Monmouth and Usk.
