Let's Talk Active Travel Network
Let's Talk about walking, wheeling and cycling in Monmouthshire!
We’re updating Monmouthshire’s Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) – and we want to hear from you! Whether you walk, wheel, or cycle, your feedback will help improve everyday routes across our communities.
What is the Active Travel Network Map?
The Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) shows existing routes and highlights future routes planned for upgrades or development over the next 15 years. It’s part of a Wales-wide effort to make local journeys healthier and more sustainable, supported by the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013.
Why is it being updated?
Monmouthshire’s current map was approved in 2022 – now it’s time to update it to reflect recent progress and plan for the future, with your input. All Welsh councils are required to regularly review and improve their active travel network of routes. Improvements may include creating new routes or upgrading existing ones. For example, resurfacing paths, widening footways, or adding features like dropped kerbs and tactile paving to improve accessibility.
The aim of mapping routes, existing and future, is to understand local demand, travel patterns and ‘trip attractors’ (schools, employment areas, etc.) and work to identify, improve or implement a physical network of routes that pass audit for active travel. The network for walking should be denser than that for cycling. Routes that do not yet pass audit can be built or improved through scheme-specific funding, as part of other highway schemes or as part of housing, or other, development. Routes on the ATNM are prioritised according to strategic impact, funding priorities, deliverability and priority over other routes and programmes.
We’d love to hear your views
Each year, Monmouthshire County Council can apply for funding to improve routes shown on the ATNM. The map allows Monmouthshire County Council to prioritise these routes for development and improvement – so your views help make sure the routes that matter most to you are included.
