Monmouthshire culture survey

Whether you take part in cultural events or not, whether you live in Monmouthshire or just visit, we want to hear from you. We also need the views of local creatives who have a keen interest in the future of the cultural environment of Monmouthshire.

Your views, captured via this survey, will help shape the culture strategy that will set out how we support, celebrate and promote the talent, opportunities and creativity within the county in the coming years.

What this theme means: To deliver its potential as an exciting cultural county, there must be a flourishing and effective creative sector in Monmouthshire. Whether that is a local community arts group or a digital communications agency, all organisations and businesses have a role to play in creating a vibrant Monmouthshire with sustainable jobs and well-connected communities.

What this theme means: Developing people is the essential ingredient for delivering a successful strategy. Monmouthshire has a wide community of people passionate about the county’s culture. We have heard from people and organisations across the county that a more connected cultural sector will have a greater impact. What do we mean by this? We can achieve more meaningful benefits by strengthening and creating new cultural partnerships.

What this theme means: Place is about making even more use of the outstanding landscapes, places and buildings that make Monmouthshire unique. We want these spaces to become backdrops for cultural activity with a local and national appeal that makes its residents really excited and involved. Place is also about playful development and building a stage for life in Monmouthshire, from town centre regeneration to education. There is a place for the serious and the practical which we will balance with the playful and creative.

Over the three years of the strategy, we have listed 22 actions – over the next couple of questions, please rank in order of preference (future years actions will be agreed by the Cultural Partnership and shared by October 2027)

Establish a Culture Partnership to facilitate the implementation of the Cultural Strategy and its future development

Sustained focus on shared marketing and publicity resources for the cultural sector in Monmouthshire

Develop a curriculum in schools for Monmouthshire that creates Ambitious, capable learners who are enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work

Develop a funding database and co-produced grant applications that encourage innovation across the cultural sector and visitor economy

Continue to develop and deliver largescale, significant events for Monmouthshire that is embraced by residents, draws both day and overnight visitors and makes a positive contribution to the local economy

To design and deliver a Creative Alliance across Monmouthshire that will create peer support and shared resources for those involved in events and activity planning

To continue digitising key items from Monmouthshire’s museum collections to enable them to be used proactively to animate spaces and tell local stories (in English and Welsh) to a wide variety of audience in exciting ways

Work with partners to create outdoor theatre, music, sporting and other cultural events.

Develop new and/or more widely accessible community education timetables/courses in areas that support the creative sector (writing, music, crafts etc.) and Welsh language and culture

To engage a wider range of audiences, making culture physically and intellectually accessible for everyone, and for future generations.

Provide greater opportunities for young people to participate in high quality arts activities and involve them in decision making.

Improve services for older adults and people living with Dementia to ensure that cultural activities are accessible and appropriate.

Support and develop partnership working with heritage, libraries and museums to develop and promote playful spaces through a young ambassador’s programme

Work with our communities and stakeholders to support anti racist initiatives and tackle poverty and Inequality through cultural activity

To encourage all cultural organisations to work together to provide high-quality opportunities for cultural volunteering with a particular emphasis on increasing the diversity of volunteers.

Provide a new cultural offer incorporating the Monmouth Museum within Shire Hall, including learning, community/ volunteer spaces and public display areas for the Nelson Collection and Monmouth History

Develop and deliver at least one public art exhibition in a location which is underrepresented in the county and which will increase footfall.

Develop our libraries spaces to be creative workspace with small scale exhibition/display facilities working in partnership with the community and third sector providers.

Utilise a wide range of spaces in venues across the county for temporary exhibitions of the Council’s (and other) collections of art and artefacts.

Borough Theatre to be a suitable space for local productions, events and creative ambition
