This consultation focusses on the B4245, from Church Road to the eastern end of Magor with Undy. If you travel through or live in this area, please share your views via the survey below.
The Undy Road Safety scheme will be constructed in early 2027. The scheme includes highway improvements to support road safety and improved walking, wheeling and cycling routes in Undy around the B4245, from Church Road to the eastern end of Magor with Undy.
This work includes:
Install Toucan (push-button controlled) crossing at pedestrian entrance to Pankhurst Drive/Rockfield Farm housing area.
Convert footway on north side of B4245 to shared use path between Pankhurst Drive and The Elms
Narrow junction splays and upgrade pedestrian crossing points on Rockfield Grove and Church Road
Replace bus laybys with in-line bus stops
Reposition and update bus shelters, add real-time bus information displays
Highway resurfacing
The design builds on the longstanding plan for the wider Undy to Rogiet active travel scheme, the General Arrangement design for which was put to public consultation in 2024, and received overwhelming public support. While we continue to work on the Undy to Rogiet route as a strategic priority, Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) has been able to secure funding from Safe Routes in Communities fund (SRiC) from Cardiff Capital Region’s Regional Transport Fund for the westernmost ‘Undy’ section improvements. This is because of recognised issues with pedestrian safety and vehicle speeds at crossings and bus stops with the built-up area along the B4245. Students attending Caldicot School have to cross the road for the bus stops to make the return journey from school, and Safe Routes in Communities funding is focused on improvement to routes within urban areas and routes to school.
This design ties into the Active Travel scheme STJ Links Phase 1 (Undy-Rogiet) as the urban section of the planned shared use path and responds to an incident earlier in 2025 where a schoolchild was struck by a moving vehicle crossing the B4245 having got off the school bus in Undy. The nearest secondary school for students from Undy is Caldicot, hence the relevance of safe routes to the bus stops. The B4245 in Undy is a wide road including inset bus stops creating an environment not conducive to active travel or driver awareness of pedestrians.
